Today I did 5 miles, and boy was it hot out! It felt good for most of it, but towards the end it was just too hot!


KEEGAN: The Opposite of Loneliness

So I found this article through one of my friends on facebook today, and it really struck a chord with me. This girl graduated from Yale last week, wrote this article several weeks ago for the graduation ceremony, and died last week in a car accident. After someone found this speech, it went viral, and has since inspired many readers. I feel for her family and friends and wish them the best. If you have 5 minutes today, please read this. What she said about her experience at Yale is so relateable. I feel the same way about my friends at college and I can’t imagine how they must feel after reading her speech. Sorry this isn’t really related to running… Although I think the running community is a strong one and I think a lot of people run to become a part of something larger than themselves. For instance, the marathon I’m running in this fall has 3000 participants! It will be so awesome to run with that many people and to experience something that significant together.

Sooooo, this morning I tried out a new app called MapMyRun, and it was pretty sweet! I ran with my phone, played music through Pandora, and every mile it would tell me the mile number, average pace, and current pace. It tracks your run via GPS and then you can review your stats over time. It also allows for training plans, and is fully customizeable. I really like it! So hopefully I’ll use it in the future. Only problem is, I’m not a big fan of running while holding a phone/ipod/etc. unless I’m on a treadmill.

This morning, I did 4 miles, and man was it rough. It was around 1pm and it was really hot, and I hadn’t eaten all day. So hopefully tomorrows run will be better!

The Failure Club

So, I read this article the other day, and I absolutely LOVE it! The idea behind the failure club is that, in order to suceed at anything truly amazing, you have to double your rate of failure. In other words, you have to pick a goal so lofty and insurmountable, that there is almost no way you can achieve it. You will surely fail. But… BUT, if you truly believe that you can learn from failure and you truly believe you can achieve it, you will eventually reach the goal.

In other words, it is my exact reason for choosing to run a marathon. I want to run it because others say I can’t, I won’t, I am not strong enough.

But they have another thing coming, because I can, and I will. I have no doubt in my mind that on October 7th, 2012, I will complete my first marathon. I know it won’t be the last marathon for me either…. 

Why, you may ask, would I choose to pursue a goal that uses failure to achieve success? Because, in life, the things worth doing are often the closest to impossible. I want to push my body to a new level of endurance. I want to push my mind and my heart to the limit. I want to achieve something extraordinary

I am only at the bottom of the mountain. I know there will be a lot of pain. But I also know there will be a lot to gain and I can’t wait! Bring it on….

Okay, so I started the official 20-week training for my first marathon this past Monday, May 21st. Here are my stats for the week:

Mon: 3 miles

Tues: rest

Wed: 3 miles

Thurs: 3 miles

Fri: rest

Sat: 5 miles

Sun: rest

and today (Monday) I also rested, even though I was supposed to do a 4 miler… hopefully I can make it up tomorrow! This week I am hoping to start some core training too.

All in all, I wasn’t too sore this week, but I have a feeling some of the longer runs coming up will make me sore! I can’t wait though…. Also, I will be posting some of my favorite sources of inspiration for running over the next few days, so make sure to check back soon!

Hey there wordpress,

My name is Kelly and I am a college student in Wisconsin, but I am from southern California. Over the past few years, I have been assembling a bucket list, and this spring I had the opportunity to fulfill one of my lifelong dreams and one of the top things on my bucket list: to run a marathon!

This spring, my college decided to compete against another college in the Lakefront Marathon this fall, on October 7, 2012. It was the perfect opportunity! I start grad school this fall, and I have all summer to train, so I had nothing to lose! I signed up a few months ago, and the 20 week training program started last Monday, on May 21st. I am going to record my progress, my hopes and aspirations, my inspiration, and the obstacles I encounter on this blog. I have another blog that is mostly pictures and artwork, so this blogging experience is new to me! I hope that this will help me get through the next 2o weeks of grueling training, and will inspire me to get through those last 26.2 miles!

I am so excited to start this journey and I have no doubts that I can finish my first marathon in a few months! I hope this blog inspires you to run, but more importantly I hope it inspires you to pursue the impossible, live life to the fullest, and to make goals and work towards them every day until you are successful!
